Two people were sitting in a chariot, in the center of a great battleground in north-central India just a couple of thousands of years back. The Yoga guru Arjunawas the one among the two who realized it wouldn't be long before the conflict began. He asked Krishna (Master of Yoga) what he ought to think and how he should look at the situation. He also demanded Krishna who is the Master of Yoga (Yogeshwara) What to do.
It was impossible to come across empty words. Krishna taught Arjuna ways to have a fully-fledged life that is self-aware and self-mastery in a very brief discussion.
It was a bloody battle and everyone lost. Vyasa's epic poem The Mahabharata (The Great Indian War) was composed by Vyasa. He made Krishna's inspiring teachings a precious jewel. They were immediately extracted and were renamed Bhagavad Gita ("The Song of God") that spread throughout the subcontinent.
It was written many thousands of years back. Today, the Gita can be located in every Indian household, and is translated into every major language around the world. Literally billions on millions of copies have been printed and written. A few years back the South African spiritual organization printed one million copies of the book to distribute it for free. Rudyard Kipling was made a Freemason of Lahore after four sacred scriptures were set on the altar.
Why is the Gita so attractive? It's practical and devoid of any abstract or ambiguous philosophy. My first trip to India was almost 40 years ago. I came across Yogis who lived in a small houseboat along the GangesRiver in Benares (Varanasi). He couldn't write or speak however people would go to him for assistance for years. How did he do it? He was armed with an original copy of the Bhagavad Gita. When being asked about the issue or problem, he would open it and point to the appropriate section, presenting the questioner with an all-inclusive and complete solution.
My spiritual awakening started with taking me away from my comfortable religion and into a brand new reality that I didn't know how deal with. I floundered in the new world until finally I purchased a book in paperback of the Bhagavadgita. I didn't read it. I took it in. I wasn't listening to words from a long-dead professor; my Self was talking to me through the pages of this tiny book. Also, I did not learn anything other than what I was already aware of. The eternal Self spoke the truth forever. My life was transformed thanks to the Bhagavad Gita, which gave me a life that never ends.
There has never been an issue in my life that the Gita did not explain or enabled me to address or comprehend. It's not dogmatic. Krishna spoke to Arjuna at the end "Now, I have taught you the wisdomwhich is secret of secrets." It's worth taking time to consider it. "Then, act as you think is best." There aren't any threats and promises, nor coercion. The reader is in control of the final outcome.
And, even more importantly, the Bhagavad Gita shows us how we can achieve a knowing more than what it says. It provides us with the means. It is recommended that you read through the Gita every single day throughout your life.
